Wild Bird Wednesday 260 - Brown Quail

This weeks bird for WBW is wild, but not native where I found it.

This is a family of Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) on top of the highest point of Rangitoto Island is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand.

I was rather pleased to find these birds as this was one of the hottest walks I have done in a very long time - at time I thought I was going to melt out of the bottom of my shoes.

These birds are not native to New Zealand, they have been introduced from Australia.  I would suspect that apple cores are not the natural food - but who can tell.

This family of birds was taking shelter from the sun under some rather dense bushes - so in the end I'm pleased with these pictures.

By the time this post goes live I will be in the middle of an adventure, so I'm not sure what my connectivity will be like - so, please be patient!

As ever, to join in with WBW, just click the blue button below the thumbnails.  SM

  8. Quail are not easy to get photos of at the best of times, so I think you deserve a pat on the back for those, Hope you enjoy your adventure, Gordon.

  9. Hope you're having a wonderful adventure (or 'did have' in case you don't read this until you get home). These are soft and pretty little birds and definitely wild even if they are wild as an introduced species. (I'd guess many of the birds I see were originally introduced here).

  13. I will have to look more closely at our Quail..They look the same to me ;).....I'm no expert, for sure..Cute family photo..Enjoy your adventure..I had to move my bird feeders..the squirrels are winning (breaking too many tree and shrub limbs)..So my bird photos will be scarce...I will continue to enjoy yours..

  14. Quail are such cute birds and this family is adorable. It is hard to look at though because we feed frozen quail to our big birds and I don't like to think of them as they really are :( So I saw you were off to an adventure standing on Mocton Street ... must be nice. Either you are more famous than you realized or you have a famous distand relative. Very cute picture of all of you :) My adventure is flooding ... we had 6 inches of rain in two hours and all the roads are flooded out here ... so I am stuck at home. Climate change is effecting us all even thpough it doesn't really exist ... hmmmmm. Make any sense to you? Enjoy your adventure, Stewart .

  24. These quail are quite pretty. I find quail to be comical birds. I noticed these don't seem to have the top notch like the ones around here.
